Today's Verse
It is written:
I TIMOTHY 2:1-4
"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "
Today's Commentary
Although most of the nation today has had our attention focused elsewhere, the fact is that today, the members of the 117th Session of the United states Congress were sworn in on both sides of the Hill, in an unusual Sunday session.
On the Senate side, Vice-President Mike Pence, who is serving as the President of the Senate, swore in all new members who will begin their own six-year term in office. (The two senators who will represent the State of Georgia have yet to be named . . . In the Senate, the balance of power still has yet to be decided with all eyes on a pair of Senate runoff elections taking place in Georgia Tuesday that will determine which party controls the chamber.)
On the House side, the public swearing-in ceremony consists of members of Congress raising their right hands and repeating the oath of office. This ceremony is led by the Speaker of the House, and no religious texts are used Today, Congress then voted to rename Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker for this 117th Session of Congress.
The oath of office for all members of Congress -- House and Senate -- reads as follows:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
BECAUSE IT IS THIS CONGRESS THAT WILL BE TASKED WITH NAMING THE WINNER OF THE FEDERAL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION NEXT WEEK, IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE PAUSE, ON THIS -- THEIR FIRST DAY OF LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS -- AND LIFT UP ALL 100 SENATORS AND 435 CONGRESSMEN BEFORE OUR LORD IN PRAYER.

Today's Prayer #1
(A Prayer for the Wicked - Those who do not yet know our Savior)
Father God in Heaven, today as these 535 members of the House and the Senate receive the mantle of authority to represent the citizens of our country in both the states and the districts, we pause to consider our own
thoughts towards many of these ones in past days.
Lord God, Your Word is clear that the REASON we are to pray for "all in authority" is so that "all people . . . be saved and . . . come to a knowledge of the truth."
Lord God, we repent that we have been accustomed to throwing stones of angry and cruel words against those in Congress whose actions prove the evil in their hearts -- actions that come against the Truth of Your Word.
Father God, as we seek Your Face to know how to reach each one, that they too might "come to the knowledge of the truth," we must first REPENT of our own words against them. Forgive US, O Lord! We take down those words that have caused their hearts to be hardened. We ask that You give each one a "new heart" that chases after You!
Father, help us to get out of Your way, so that You can do this work in their lives. Teach us Your ways, O Lord, we pray . . . "Father, forgive THEM, for they know not what they do." In Your Name, amen and amen.

(A Prayer for the Righteous in Authority)
Lord God, we who are in close touch with the "life" of the Congress have been so blessed to see many members over the years, in both the House and the Senate, being drawn to You and coming to the knowledge of the truth.
We ask now for a FRESH ANOINTING to be poured out upon each one as they enter this new season of BATTLE for the nation. We ask for their PROTECTION, and that they be led by Your Hand in wisdom, day by day and vote by vote,
to see RIGHTEOUSNESS RULE in our nation.
We ask this in Your Name, amen.
