Joy erupts across Israel at the return of living hostages
|
|
LAVON, Israel (AP) — It was a day of joy and tears across Israel. Families, loved ones and friends watched as Hamas released the last living hostages held captive for over two years in the Gaza Strip.
On day 738 since Alon Ohel was taken hostage, family and friends of the young music lover jumped to their feet, cheered, blew into shofars — traditional horns that announce glad tidings — and hugged each other when they saw his picture on a livestream among the seven hostages Hamas first released to the Red Cross on Monday morning.
“This is the best morning in my life. I just want to hug him,” Ohel’s cousin, Noam Rozen, 24, said before choking up.
By midday, 13 more hostages were freed, bringing the final number of the living hostages released to 20.
With other members of his family, and dozens of supporters cheering, Rozen took down one of the hostage posters that had long been hanging by the village’s entrance and replaced it with a banner saying in Hebrew: “Welcome back home — the heart returned to beating and now we can breathe.” (AP News) Read more here.

All Living Hostages Freed, Israel Rejoices, Trump Welcomed with Enormous Beach Banner
|
|
Hamas released all 20 remaining living hostages on Monday as part of the Trump administration-brokered ceasefire that paused two years of war between Israel and the terror group. The deal was negotiated under President Donald Trump’s direction and included the release of Palestinian combatants by Israel.
Trump arrived in Tel Aviv, welcomed by an enormous beach banner, to mark the ceasefire and hostage agreement, which he said had effectively ended the war and created a road to long-term peace.
As Trump flew over Israel, he was greeted with a large beach banner that could be seen from above. Images and video released Monday showed freed hostages being reunited with their families as celebrations broke out across the country.
“After two harrowing years in darkness and captivity, 20 courageous hostages are returning to the glorious embrace of their families,” Trump said while addressing Israeli lawmakers. He added, “And after so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today, the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a Holy Land that is FINALLY AT PEACE — a land and a region that will live, God willing, in peace for all eternity.”
Trump also said the world must never forget the attack that began the conflict. “Thousands of innocent Israeli civilians were attacked by terrorists in one of the most evil and heinous desecrations of innocent life the world has ever seen,” he said.
“The story of fierce Israeli resolve and triumph since Oct. 7 should be proof to the entire world that those who seek to destroy this nation are doomed to bitter failure,” Trump added. “The State of Israel is strong — and it will live and thrive forever.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump for his leadership in securing the deal. (The Western Journal) Read more here, including many video links to this news.

'The sun rises on a Holy Land that is finally at peace,' says Trump in first US presidential address to Knesset since 2008
|
|
Speaking before the Knesset, US President Donald Trump says it’s a “great honor.”
Trump says it is a day to give thanks to “the almighty God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
“Today the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a Holy Land that is finally at peace,” says Trump, after praising the bravery of the 20 living hostages who returned to their families this morning.
He expresses his hope that “the region will live in peace for all eternity.”
It is not only the end of war, he says, “it is also the end of an age of terror and death and the beginning of the age of faith and hope and of God.”
It’s the start of an “age of concord” for Israel and the countries of the region, he promises. “It’s the historic dawn of the new Middle East,” he says.
"The God who once dwelled among His people in this city still calls us, in the words of Scripture, to turn from evil and do good, to seek peace and pursue it." (Times of Israel) Read more here,

- We continue to pray for peace over your people in Israel and that they would come to know you intimately. We pray, Lord, that your hand would be upon our nation and on this administration to administer justice and peace, not only in our land but also to the nations. We speak all of this in faith, in Jesus' name, amen.
- “He chooses our inheritance for us, The glory of Jacob whom He loves.” (Psalm 47:4)

Trump celebrates peace in the Middle East after signing Gaza deal: 'Achieved the impossible'
|
|
President celebrates peace deal as Hamas releases final 20 hostages and Israel withdraws from Gaza frontlines
|
|
President Donald Trump celebrated "peace in the Middle East" after he signed the historic peace agreement that ended two years of fighting in Gaza.
"At long last, we have peace in the Middle East, and it's a very simple expression, peace in the Middle East," Trump said during remarks at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, flanked by dozens of world leaders.
"We've heard it for many years, but nobody thought it could ever get there. And now we're there."
Trump went on: "This is the day that people across this region and around the world have been working, striving, hoping, and praying for. With the historic agreement we have just signed, those prayers of millions have finally been answered. Together, we have achieved the impossible."
Now, according to Trump, mediators will begin work on phases two, three and four of the 20-point peace plan.
"This breakthrough that we're here to celebrate tonight is more than the end of the war in Gaza, it's, with God's help, it'll be the new beginning for an entire beautiful Middle East," Trump went on.
"We don't have a Gaza and we don't have an Iran as an excuse. That was a good excuse, but we don't have that anymore. All the momentum now is toward a great, glorious and lasting peace and our commitment to fulfilling the 20 point plan we developed together will be the crucial foundation for achieving that bright future," the president went on.
Trump said he believed the deal would mean an end to "terror" in the region. "We want to get rid of the terror and get on to other things. There are many other things in life that are so good."
"Let us continue in the spirit of cooperation and goodwill that has finally brought us to this incredible historic breakthrough. If we do it together, we will reach the Middle East's incredible destiny, a safe and prosperous and beautiful crossroads of culture and commerce, faith in humanity and geographic center. This will be the geographic center of the world." (Fox News) Read more here.

2. Massive explosion in Cairo during Gaza summit in Egypt - Israel Hayom
A powerful explosion rocked the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Monday, shattering windows kilometers away from the site. The blast occurred at a military base in the northern part of the city, close to several government institutions.
The explosion took place as regional and world leaders were gathering in Sharm el-Sheikh, in southern Sinai, for a peace summit on the future of the Gaza Strip.
A huge cloud of smoke was seen rising over Cairo, the largest city in the Middle East and Africa, as rescue and emergency vehicles rushed toward the scene.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear, but social media users claimed it originated from an Egyptian military base located in the northern suburbs of the capital, near government and public buildings. (Read more)

3. Gaza ceasefire agreement signed by US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey - i24 News
The "Peace Conference" opened Monday evening in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, sponsored by the United States, Qatar, and Turkey.
American President Donald Trump, who arrived directly from the Knesset after a widely noted speech, signed the document alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Trump hailed "a great day for the Middle East," stating that "the second phase of negotiations on Gaza has already begun," referring to discussions on the demilitarization of the territory and the establishment of a post-Hamas government.
He also mentioned the creation of a "peace council" involving Egypt to oversee the transition. (Read more)

4. Israel releasing 2,000 prisoners, before return of slain hostages
- World Israel News
Israel has begun releasing nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners from its detention facilities after all living hostages were freed, despite Hamas still failing to return the bodies of 28 deceased captives.
Israel had initially vowed to release detainees only after receiving and positively identifying the remains of the slain hostages. However, an IDF spokeswoman confirmed to The Times of Israel that the government decided to proceed with the prisoner release once the living captives safely returned to Israel.
Footage circulating on social media showed buses carrying prisoners departing from Ofer Prison, a military detention facility north of Jerusalem in Samaria.
Among those released Monday are 250 convicted terrorists serving life sentences for murdering Israelis. According to Hebrew-language media reports, 135 of those convicts will be deported to third countries, while 101 are expected to return to Palestinian Authority-controlled municipalities in Judea and Samaria. 1. China Detains Influential House Church Pastor - Christian Today
Since Thursday, police have detained nearly 30 pastors and staff members of Zion Church, an influential Chinese house church network, in what many fear is the beginning of a new wave of persecution against Christians in China.
The arrests took place in at least six cities across China. More than 10 officers broke into senior pastor Jin “Ezra” Mingri’s apartment in Beihai, Guangxi province, on Friday and searched his home all night before taking him away in handcuffs, according to the nonprofit ChinaAid. Authorities detained one pastor at the Shenzhen airport. Church members have lost contact with more than a dozen congregants in Beihai and are uncertain whether they’ve also been arrested.
Jin’s daughter, Grace, who lives in Maryland near Washington, DC, first heard about the roundup on Friday morning as she woke up to see her father’s prayer-request letter about Zion pastor Wang Lin’s arrest. Then she received a call from her mom, who also lives in the US, saying she had lost contact with her dad. They later found out he was under arrest in Beihai. (Read more)

2. Pressure growing on Johnson to call House back amid shutdown fight - The Hill
House GOP leaders are facing increasing pressure to bring the chamber back to Washington amid a shutdown fight with no end in sight.
A growing number of GOP lawmakers are voicing frustrations with their leadership for prolonging the House recess, warning that the optics surrounding that inactivity could backfire on the party to the benefit of Democrats.
The rumbling is creating a headache for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and his leadership team, who have made canceling votes a central part of the Republicans’ shutdown strategy. In doing so, they’re betting that an empty House will pile pressure on Senate Democrats to drop their opposition to a GOP spending bill and help reopen the government.
But as the shutdown drags on, neither side has given an inch, causing federal workers to receive diminished paychecks on Friday and threatening a similar pay squeeze on military personnel, who are at risk of missing their first scheduled paycheck next Wednesday. (Read more)

|
- Lord, we pray for a solution to reopen the government. Give our lawmakers the ability to negotiate and come to an agreement to resolve this crisis, so those people who are not being paid will get their paychecks again. Also, all the departments that have been affected by the shutdown will reopen again.
- "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask." (James 4:1-2)

3. Pritzker says Trump can’t invoke Insurrection Act unless there is ‘rebellion’ - Washington Examiner
Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) on Sunday said President Donald Trump can’t invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy the National Guard to Chicago unless there is a “rebellion” or an “insurrection.”
“The Insurrection Act is called the Insurrection Act for a reason. There has to be a rebellion. There has to be an insurrection in order for him to be allowed to invoke it,” Pritzker told George Stephanopoulos on the ABC News program This Week.
“Again, he can say anything he wants,” he said of Trump. “But if the Constitution means anything … the Insurrection Act cannot be invoked to send them in because they want to fight crime.”
Last week, Trump said he was open to using the Insurrection Act to keep people safe if court rulings prevented his administration from sending troops to Chicago and other sanctuary cities.
“If people were being killed and courts were holding us up or governors or mayors were holding us up, sure, I’d do that,” he said when asked if he would invoke the 19th-century federal law. “I mean, I want to make sure that people aren’t killed. We have to make sure that our cities are safe.” (Read more)

|
- Lord, we just pray that the governors of these high crime states will implement ways to prevent the crime instead of fighting President Trump who simply wants to make sure these cities are safe. If these governors were doing their jobs, then there would be no need to send in the National Guard.
- "For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer." (Romans 13:4)

4. Trump hints at new monument in DC - Washington Examiner
The new monument mirrors Paris’s Arc De Triomphe, and in the post appears to be across the Potomac River from Arlington National Cemetery.
The president was spotted peeking at the design, drawn up by Harrison Design, during a meeting in the Oval Office with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Trump is considering construction of the arch in celebration of America’s 250th birthday next year, the Washington Post reported.
The new arch also appears similar to the Grand Army Plaza Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch in Brooklyn. It would have two eagles with a gold-winged angel on top, with a traffic circle around it. (Read more)

5. Ceasefire takes effect as cabinet approves revised terrorist release list - Israel Hayom
Thee IDF withdrawal to the "yellow line" on the agreed map being was completed on Friday noon, the military announced, triggering setting in motion the implementation of President Donald Trump's deal, brokered earlier this week. The first stage of the deal effectively began, with all hostages to be returned within 72 hours in a single batch. US President Donald Trump will arrive in the country on Monday for a brief visit, during which he is expected to address the Knesset plenum.
The ceasefire agreement entered into effect starting at noon. IDF forces positioned themselves on current deployment lines, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement framework and hostage return. Southern Command IDF forces are deployed in the area and will continue to operate to remove any immediate threat. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked President Donald Trump and said it would have not been possible without Israel's military and diplomatic pressure on Hamas. Netanyahu said the IDF will remain in Gaza to continue pressuring Hamas until it relinquishes its weapons.
The ministers, called for an urgent telephone vote, approved the revised terrorist release list. Among the opponents were National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Minister Amichai Eliyahu, Wasserlauf and Strock. (Read more)

6. Two greenish comets are streaking across the night sky this month - NBC News
Two greenish-hued comets are swinging through the inner solar system this fall, offering a rare chance to spot them in the coming weeks.
The comets, named C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN), are visible from the Northern Hemisphere now as their orbits take them through our cosmic backyard on their journey around the sun.
Two comet appearances in the same month are very uncommon.
Both celestial objects can be seen with binoculars or small telescopes through the end of October. Comet Lemmon may be visible to the naked eye when it reaches its closest point to Earth, and is therefore at is brightest, on or around Oct. 21.
In the Northern Hemisphere from now until midmonth, Comet Lemmon will appear near the Big Dipper before the sun rises, according to EarthSky, a website devoted to skywatching and astronomy. It’s best to look northeast in the sky in the hours before dawn, slightly below the grouping of stars that make up the distinct bowl and handle of the Big Dipper.
In about a week, the comet will instead be visible in the evening sky, rising in the west. From that point through the end of the month, it may be possible to see it with the unaided eye, but these cosmic objects can be tricky to see.
Comet SWAN can be viewed in the evening sky through the end of the month. The best time to spot it will be roughly 90 minutes after sunset, facing southwest. This comet likely won’t be bright enough to see with the naked eye, so binoculars or a small telescope will be necessary. (Read more)

- Thank you, Lord, that we can enjoy your creation and the beauty of the heavens by watching these comets!

The Festival of Sukkot and You
The Daily Jot, Bill Wilson, October 13, 2025
The festival of Sukkot is God-ordered and it is a sacred and joyful time on the biblical calendar to focus on God’s dwelling among His people. Known as the “Season of Our Joy,” Sukkot recalls God’s protection and provision during Israel’s wilderness journey. As commanded in Leviticus 23:42, the people were to live in sukkahs—temporary shelters—to remember that God “made the people of Israel live in sukkahs when I brought them out of Egypt.” Jewish sages teach that the sukkah itself symbolized the Sh’khinah, the “Glory Cloud” that shielded Israel from scorching sun and wild beasts, and provided water and food. It is God’s tangible presence wherever His people go. And it has great prophetic implications.
Modern sukkahs may look different—built from wood or canvas, topped with branches or bamboo—but the symbolism remains the same. The open roof allows those inside to see the heavens, a visual reminder that God’s presence still hovers over His people as it did in the desert. Sukkot is also a time of hospitality and joy, marked by blessings, songs, and shared meals. Tradition holds that Abraham’s “sukkah,” his tent, was open to all, where he offered food and introduced travelers to the one true God. In that spirit, Sukkot calls us not only to rejoice in God’s presence but to extend that joy outward, welcoming others into the story of faith just as Abraham did. The seventh day of Sukkot, known as Hoshana Rabbah (“Great Salvation”), carries special prophetic weight. Read More

Meteor hunters rejoice! The Orionid meteor shower 2025 peaks next week with no moon in sight
|
|
The annual Orionid meteor shower comes to a peak on Oct. 20-21
Get ready stargazers! The Orionid meteor shower peaks next week overnight on Oct. 20-21, bringing with it a flurry of spectacular 'shooting stars' to brighten a blissfully dark moonless sky.
The Orionid meteor shower is active from Oct. 2 to Nov. 7. It occurs when Earth barrels through the trail of debris shed by Halley's Comet as it makes its 76-year orbital tour of the solar system. Orionid 'shooting stars' arise when ancient comet particles collide with our planet at speeds of roughly 41 miles per second (66 kilometers per second), burning up in a magnificent display as they are overwhelmed by friction.
In 2025, the shower will reach peak activity overnight on Oct. 20-21, when 10-20 meteors could be witnessed each hour blazing away from a point of origin — known as a radiant — located in the constellation Orion, fairly close to the red giant star Betelgeuse. During exceptional years, the shower can see peak rates of 50 to 75 meteors each hour, putting it on par with the more prolific August Perseid meteor shower.
The Orionid meteor shower will unfold against a pristinely dark, moonless sky — unlike the Perseids, whose August peak was somewhat ruined by the light cast by a waning gibbous moon that hid dimmer members of the shower from view. (Space News) Read More
