Christian Churches Expand Despite Rising Persecution
|
|
|
Watchdog organization International Christian Concern (ICC) released an updated report on Christian persecution around the world, finding that churches are expanding in the face of violent action against them.
The report detailed growing trends threatening religious freedom, including religious nationalism, state control of religious groups, and terrorism, while also acknowledging that discontent with repression and religious restrictions are increasing. “Despite mounting repression, Christianity continues to grow in unexpected places,” the report says, describing the Iranian house church movement as “one of the fastest growing in the world,” propelled by underground networks and digital actions.
The Western world is also facing increasing persecution. “While Christians in Western nations don’t experience the same horrific persecution that believers in other hot spots face, religious freedom in corners of the West is eroding,” ICC wrote, going on to list hindrances to freedom such as laws dictating where Christians can pray, educators losing their jobs or facing court battles due to their beliefs, and hate crimes against Christians in Europe.
Iran faces some of the most intense Christian persecution, the report explains. “Religious minorities face an increasingly lethal environment: converts from Islam are arrested, imprisoned, and executed under sweeping blasphemy and national-security laws that criminalize faith and dissent,” it reads. “The judiciary and security apparatus facilitate this assault, ensuring ideological conformity through sham trials and death sentences.” Despite the opposition, the Church in Iran is “one of the fastest growing Christian populations in the world.” (American Faith) Read More Here |

Bessent: US to Impose ‘Toughest Sanctions in History’ on Iran
|
|
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Aug. 20 that the United States will impose the “toughest sanctions in history on Iran,” the details of which will be announced on Monday.
In an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Bessent said he planned to hold a press conference on Aug. 24 to share the Trump administration’s plan to increase economic pressure on Iran following months of military conflict. The Iran war, which started on Feb. 28, restarted last month following the collapse of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.
“It is a one-two punch. We have the blockade, and we are going to have the toughest sanctions in history, and I will tell you this will work. It worked in Venezuela once we put up the blockade. It is working in Cuba right now, and it is going to work in Iran—and we are going to collapse this regime,” Bessent said.
The secretary’s comments came after President Donald Trump announced on Aug. 19 that the United States was going to engage in major economic warfare against Iran. He said that economic sanctions and isolation would be carried out at an “unprecedented scale.”
Bessent on Thursday called for America’s allies to join the United States in imposing the “greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world.” He said it was time for America’s allies and the rest of the world to make a decision as the United States prepares to increase economic pressure on Iran and “squash the economy of this murderous regime.” (The Epoch Times) Read more here

Supreme Court temporarily allows Trump ballroom construction to continue
|
|
The Supreme Court on Friday at least for now allowed President Donald Trump to continue constructing a new ballroom adjoining the White House.
Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary stay that blocks lower court rulings that would have put the above-ground portion of the project on hold.But the decision is only provisional, giving the justices more time to consider next steps.
The legal challenge has been brought by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which argued that the president did not have authority to proceed with construction and objected to the huge new ballroom design on aesthetic grounds.
In court filings, the administration has said that as of Aug. 14, construction was 65% complete on the $400 million, privately funded project, with a 250-person crew working 20 hours a day, seven days a week.
The plan includes an extensive underground component, including secure locations and medical facilities that the administration has argued are vital for security.

Father, we thank You for this temporary ruling, and we ask that You allow this ballroom to move forward on a permanent basis. It cannot be returned to its “original” condition anyway, since the construction is almost completed. The constant litigation regarding the White House ballroom is foolish, since numerous Presidents have altered it previously. This project would be a great help to all future presidents.

Trump’s Top Congress Liaison To Leave Administration
|
|
President Donald Trump’s top liaison to Congress is preparing to leave the White House, adding another consequential vacancy to a growing list of senior administration departures.
James Braid, 35, is expected to step down as White House director of legislative affairs in the coming weeks. CNN reported that Braid plans to enter the private sector, citing a Trump administration official. Politico also confirmed the planned departure but said his next destination was not immediately clear.
Vice President JD Vance publicly praised Braid after the reports surfaced, writing on X that he “had one of the toughest jobs in the entire Administration” and delivered for Trump “at every turn.”
Vance credited Braid with helping secure tax cuts, immigration enforcement resources, border wall funding, Cabinet confirmations and the administration’s first major cryptocurrency legislation. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., also praised Braid’s work and wished him and his family well in their next chapter, according to The Guardian.

Trump announces plan to increase beef imports and lower prices that ranchers previously criticized
|
|
President Donald Trump on Friday announced a plan to ease higher tariffs on increased beef imports.
The move, Trump explained in a Truth Social post, would help U.S. ranchers and lower beef prices for consumers.
"As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history. As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff," Trump said.
However, in response to Trump's past efforts to waive higher quotas for beef imports, the American beef industry has argued the plan hurts ranchers.
In May, when Trump was reportedly considering an executive order to allow more beef imports, the American Farm Bureau Federation issued a statement criticizing the plan, saying it would increase beef supplies in the short term while weakening incentives for American ranchers to rebuild herds. Lord, as the President attempts to reduce beef prices for Americans, we pray protection over this beef being imported. We bind any diseases hidden in the imports, and ask that You cleanse all portions that enter the United States. We also ask that You especially protect American ranchers and continue to increase their herds.

FAA to Halt Reagan Flights for Trump’s Freedom 250 IndyCar Race
|
|
The Federal Aviation Administration plans to suspend flight operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for three hours on Aug. 23 as Washington hosts the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the first INDYCAR race staged on the National Mall.
Flights are expected to pause from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. EDT, according to an FAA statement. The agency said it has been coordinating with stakeholders to ensure the safe and efficient movement of air traffic during the event. The schedule remains subject to change, and travelers are being advised to check directly with their airlines.
The closure will coincide with the main event of the Aug. 22–23 race weekend. Organizers have laid out a 1.7-mile, seven-turn street circuit around the National Mall, including a four-tenths-of-a-mile straightaway on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Drivers will pass the National Archives, National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, with views of the U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument. The race was recently extended to 147 laps, bringing its total distance to a symbolic 250 miles.
President Trump launched the event with a Jan. 30 executive order directing the Interior and Transportation departments to designate a route, accelerate permits and prepare the course. (Read more)

1. Mossad chief, Syria FM hold positive de-escalation talks after Israeli airbase strike, source says - Jerusalem Post
A meeting held on Sunday between Israeli and Syrian officials “went well” amid ongoing efforts to lower tensions between the two countries, a source familiar with the meeting told The Jerusalem Post.
Those in attendance included Mossad chief Roman Gofman and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, as well as the heads of the country's General and Military intelligence services, according to N12 News.
Shaibani said the meeting dealt with halting Israeli attacks and renewing negotiations for a security agreement between the countries, N12 also reported. (Read more)

2. Netanyahu’s office scorns Turkish regime threat to arrest PM - JNS
Israel “has long ceased to be impressed by Turkey’s hypocrisy,” the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem said on Friday, hours after Ankara issued another arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan “is an antisemitic dictator who has massacred Kurds, harbors Hamas terrorists, occupies half of Cyprus, and jails record numbers of journalists and politicians who oppose him,” the PMO said in a separate statement in English.
“He now seeks to extend his aggression against Israel into Syria. Israel will not tolerate it,” the statement read. (Read more)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video Sunday addressing what he characterized as one of the most significant security challenges facing modern militaries: the proliferation and use of armed drones in combat.
In the footage, filmed in his office with a map of the Middle East visible behind him, Netanyahu held a scale model of an F-35 fighter jet while drawing a comparison to consumer drones.

4. IDF says 4 kites apparently flown from Gaza found in Nahal Oz; residents demand response - Times of Israel
Four kites apparently flown from the Gaza Strip landed in Kibbutz Nahal Oz over the weekend, prompting concerned residents to demand that Israel take action against what they believed to be a threat to their safety, given Hamas’s history of launching kites carrying incendiary devices at border communities.
The Israel Defense Forces said that one of the kites was found inside the kibbutz on Friday, and the three others were found on Saturday morning. It assessed that the kites, which were attached to kilometers-long strings, were flown across the border from Gaza.
The military stressed that “no suspicious findings were identified on the kites,” and that “at no stage was there any danger to the public,” although this did little to reassure residents of Nahal Oz, who warned that “this was how it started before October 7.” (Read more)

5. UK's proposed ban on Israeli settlement trade would breach int'l legal obligations, lawyers warn - Jerusalem Post
UK Lawyers for Israel has warned the UK government that a proposed ban on trade with Israeli businesses in east Jerusalem and the West Bank would breach several of Britain’s international legal obligations.
Former trade minister Chris Bryant argued that the UK has a legal obligation not to “aid or assist” the Israeli settlements, saying that he is actively considering bans on the import and export of goods and services.

1. Missouri Judge Clears Trump-Backed House Map for November Midterms- The Epoch Times
A Missouri judge cleared the way Wednesday for the new U.S. House districts backed by President Donald Trump to be used in the November midterm elections.
Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green threw out an effort to force a statewide referendum on the Republican-drawn map.
The decision represents a win for Republicans as they try to keep their slim majority in the House.
The districts already appeared on August primary ballots, as Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins turned away a petition carrying thousands of signatures. The petition sought a November vote on the boundaries. Hoskins said the state constitution does not permit a referendum on congressional redistricting.
Green agreed with this interpretation.
“The Missouri Constitution does not supply any statement — let alone a clear one — reallocating authority over congressional redistricting away from the General Assembly to a referendum process,” the judge wrote. (Read more)

2. Pro-lifers praise Trump nominee for new FDA chief- LifeSite News
President Donald Trump has announced the nomination of administration health policy adviser Dr. Heidi Overton to succeed Marty Makary as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), garnering early praise from pro-life activists.
Back in May, the White House confirmed Makary’s resignation amid a storm of issues with his tenure, including his handling of abortion pills and vaccines as well as internal staff turmoil. The role was temporarily filled by Deputy Commissioner for Food Kyle Diamantas, who insisted that he was pro-life amid concerns about a past assignment representing Planned Parenthood in a property dispute.
Overton is currently deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, and served on the president’s Office of American Innovation and Domestic Policy Council in Trump’s first term.
Posting Wednesday on his personal social network Truth Social, Trump boasted Overton was a “ROCKSTAR in my Administration, where she has worked directly with Secretary Kennedy, Dr. Oz, and team, to deliver on the MOST TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda in History. She is known to take on the HARDEST issues, and bring me solutions that work best for the Country.”
The Daily Signal reports that some top national pro-life advocates are already optimistic about the pick.
“Dr. Overton is the right candidate,” Americans United for Life CEO John Mize said. “She has the scientific and medical background that will enable her to perform an objective analysis of the dangers chemical abortion poses to women. Americans United for Life supports Dr. Overton as the next commissioner of the FDA.”
“Congratulations to Dr. Heidi Overton on her nomination to lead the FDA,” said Live Action founder Lila Rose. “This is a chance to restore trust and put health over politics. Dr. Overton should pull the deadly abortion pill from the market. Step one: end mail-order abortions that kill babies even in pro-life states.” (Read more here)

3: Campaign to Reunite Dying Chinese Pastor with Family Grows amid Increasing Crackdown - The Washington Stand
As China’s communist regime continues to accelerate its oppression of Christian pastors and believers, a campaign to allow a persecuted pastor ailing from cancer to reunite with his family is intensifying ahead of Xi Jinping’s summit with President Donald Trump in Washington in September.
Last week, reports surfaced that three young pastors of the independent Maizhong Reformed Church in Fuyang have been sentenced “to prison terms of up to one year and seven months” simply for performing weddings and organizing religious instruction, among other ordinary pastoral work. The court accused the Christian pastors of “organizing illegal gatherings” after the communist regime had legally shut down the church, claiming that their activities “had severely disrupted public order.”
Outcry over the case has grown after the wife of one of the pastors, Xu Chao, described the miscarriage of justice on social media. “What is infuriating is that people who clearly committed no crime have been forcibly convicted, while those who illegally installed surveillance equipment in my home remain free from consequences,” she wrote. “Those who cause innocent people to suffer injustice are the ones who are guilty. History will remember everything that is happening today and will judge every decision that has been made.”
As noted by ChinaAid, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has increasingly employed charges of “illegal business operations,” “fraud,” “inciting subversion of state power,” and “organizing illegal gatherings” to describe routine activities of churches that are disfavored by the state ever since it instituted its revised Regulations on Religious Affairs in 2018. As a result, a number estimated to be in the thousands of “unregistered” house churches have been shut down, and hundreds of pastors have been imprisoned. (Read more)

4. Singham-linked nonprofits fight House subpoenas, accuse lawmakers of McCarthy-era ‘witch hunt’- Fox
Two nonprofits subpoenaed in a House Ways and Means Committee investigation into communist tech tycoon Neville Roy Singham's funding network have formally objected to the congressional subpoenas, accusing lawmakers of reviving "Red Scare" tactics to target them because of their political views.
In letters from their attorneys to the committee, New York City-based BreakThrough News, a pro-China media outlet, and Peoples Forum Inc., a socialist activist group, argued the subpoenas violate the First Amendment.
They claim lawmakers are targeting their free speech, journalism and political advocacy rather than conducting a legitimate tax-law investigation.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., defended the investigation and criticized the organizations' refusal to comply with the July 21 subpoenas.
"Make no mistake: Compliance with a congressional subpoena isn't optional, and the Committee will use all tools it has available to investigate whether foreign actors are exploiting our tax code to sow chaos and create division," Smith said. (Read more)

5. FBI arrests NY woman for allegedly plotting ISIS-linked attack on state Capitol building in Albany- Just the News
FBI Director Kash Patel announced Thursday that his bureau arrested a woman this week who was allegedly planning to bomb the New York state Capitol building in Albany in an Islamic State-inspired attack.
The bureau said Jessica Bowie, 35, of Albany, is charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS. She pledged her support to the terrorist group after she converted to Islam approximately five years ago, according to Fox News.
Patel said Bowie was in the advanced stages of her plan where she conducted surveillance at the state Capitol at least 5 times and purchased materials to make an explosive device.
A criminal complaint in the case claimed Bowie wanted to “destroy as much of the building as possible” and “kill the Senators while they are meeting.” She also allegedly discussed disguising a bomb in a DoorDash delivery bag.
"She didn’t just want to kill lawmakers. She wanted a complete disruption of our government," Craig Tremaroli, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Albany field office, said during a news conference Thursday.
The agent said Bowie allegedly planned to leave the country after bombing the state Capitol and later return to "do more," including an attack in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
She also allegedly spoke of attacking the White House and the president, he said. (Read more)

6: Nigerian Christian, Muslim Leaders Sign Peace Accord ahead of 2027 Election - The Washington Stand
More than 50 Christian and Muslim leaders in Nigeria have signed a peace accord aimed at promoting religious harmony and countering hate speech and extremism, as the country prepares for a closely watched 2027 election.
The agreement, which was signed on August 13 in Abuja, was organized by the Saudi-based Muslim World League. It also launched a new interfaith body intended to promote cooperation between Christians and Muslims across Nigeria.
The accord comes at a sensitive time for Nigeria, where religious tensions have been heightened by years of violence and political divisions. The country has a predominantly Muslim north and largely Christian south, although both faiths are found throughout the country.
John Praise Daniel, chairman of the Northern Christian Religious Leaders' Assembly, said the agreement could help reduce divisive rhetoric among religious leaders.
“No hate speech, and no disrespect for other religious groups, no calling of people as infidels,” Daniel said.
Khalid Abubakar, secretary-general of Jama’atu Nasri Islam, said the agreement was not intended to weaken the religious identity of either community.

Top Dems go silent after McCarthy vindicated for booting Swalwell off intel committee

Those were among the defenses senior Democrats mounted on former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s behalf as former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tried to force the California Democrat off the powerful House Intelligence Committee over his relationship with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine "Fang Fang" Fang.
Now, newly declassified FBI records and a raid on his home are casting fresh light on Swalwell's relationship with Fang that Democrats denied and previously argued did not justify McCarthy’s actions.
The newly declassified records, released by the White House Government Transparency Task Force Monday, detail two FBI interviews with Swalwell, both conducted as part of a broader investigation examining Fang’s involvement with illicit campaign contributions, funneling interns to Swalwell's office and other activity. "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government." Those words are widely attributed to Alexander Tytler, the Scottish judge and historian who lived from 1747 to 1813. There is, however, some debate over the attribution. Historians and researchers have questioned whether Tytler actually wrote the passage in the form in which it is commonly quoted, whether he expressed a similar idea that was later expanded and attributed to him, or whether the passage originated elsewhere. The exact authorship may be debatable. The warning itself is not.
Here is the prophetic quote:

This is no idle warning. Look at the United States today and the pattern is hard to miss. This is exactly what is happening today.
Our founders were statesmen who sacrificed much to create a system focused on the common good. They had businesses, farms, and families, and they risked everything to build a limited government unlike any the world had seen. Today we are governed largely by professional politicians, many of whom have never signed the front of a paycheck or run a business. Melania Trump announces $2 million scholarship to benefit foster children

First lady Melania Trump announced a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation to fund scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University as part of her Fostering the Future initiative, a program designed to give children transitioning out of foster care expanded educational opportunity.
"Our mission is simple yet transformational: provide every young person from the foster care community the chance to earn a college education, launch a meaningful career, and achieve lasting financial independence," Trump said while speaking in the Rose Garden on Thursday.
President Donald Trump attended the Rose Garden event on Thursday but did not deliver remarks. Roger Penske, founder and chairman of the Penske Corporation, praised the first lady's commitment to the younger generation in his speech.

118-year-old mystery cracked as divers discover lost warship beneath the waves
|

Divers recently uncovered the remains of a Royal Navy warship off the Isle of Wight — 118 years after it went down.
The ship, HMS Tiger, sank in 1908 after colliding with another Royal Navy warship, the 10,000-ton HMS Berwick, news agency SWNS reported. More than half of HMS Tiger's 57 crew members were killed in the sinking.
The wreck remained undiscovered until Aug. 10, when the ProjectXplore dive group announced its discovery.
A wreath was also laid on the wreck in memory of those who died.
In a statement, the organizers of ProjectXplore called it "the privilege of a lifetime to research, discover and document the wreck of HMS Tiger."
"We sincerely hope that our work will ensure that HMS Tiger, her story and the memory of those connected with her endure for future generations," organizers Leo Fielding and Dan McMullen said.
The discovery comes as the British government moves to strengthen legal protections for military shipwrecks through its Armed Forces Bill.
Under the proposed changes, wrecks such as HMS Tiger would be protected from the moment they're discovered, making it illegal to disturb the sites or remove items without permission. (Fox News) Read More
