Trump returns to National Prayer Breakfast as faith takes center stage in second term

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump celebrated the return of faith in the United States at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning.

Trump delivered his remarks in the Hilton ballroom, emphasizing that a country needs faith to be a “great nation.”

“To be a great nation, however, I think, and I may be wrong, but I don’t think so because I’ve watched a lot and I study a lot, you have to have religion,” he said. “You have to have it. You have to have faith. You have to have God.”

“Thankfully, as we gather today, there are many signs that religion is coming back, and now it’s no longer signs. It’s just coming back. It’s coming back so strong,” he added.

Trump noted that bible sales and church attendance are rising.

“In 2025, more copies of the Holy Bible were sold in the United States than at any time in the last 100 years. How about that?” Trump said.

“In the last 12 months, young Americans attended church at nearly twice the rate as they did four years ago,” he went on to add.

Trump said that radical leftists and many Democrats are not pleased with the resurgence of religion. (Breitbart) Read more here.

President Trump Announces a Special Event on May 17th on the National Mall:
Rededicating our Nation Back to God
https://nypost.com/2026/02/05/us-news/president-trump-announces-may-17-national-mall-prayer-event/

WASHINGTON — President Trump announced Thursday that a massive prayer event will be held on the National Mall this coming May — declaring it is time “to rededicate America as one nation under God,” as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday this year.

Trump revealed the event during remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton, where he also doubled down on his commitment to religious liberty in the US.

“This morning, I’m pleased to announce that on May 17, 2026, that we’re inviting Americans from all across the country to come together on our National Mall, to pray, to give thanks, to rededicate America as one nation under God,” the president said.

Trump did not specify why May 17 was selected, however, shortly before the Declaration of Independence, the colonial Congress had declared May 17, 1776, a national day of fasting and prayer.

May 17 also comes a few days after multiple Christian denominations celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ.

Trump also revealed that the Department of Education will be taking steps to protect prayer in public schools.

“I’m also pleased to announce that the Department of Education is officially issuing its new guidance to protect the right to prayer in our public schools,” Trump said. “That’s a big deal.”

“Now the Democrats will sue us, but we’ll win.”

The Supreme Court ruled in 1962 that school-sponsored, mandatory prayer in public schools violates the First Amendment.

“This is a beautiful American tradition, and it’s a true honor to be back,” Trump remarked about the National Prayer Breakfast.

“I think I’ve been here just about every time. It’s hard to turn it down. I don’t have the courage to turn it down,” he continued.

“The last time I came, I got in [to DC] at 4 in the morning. They said, ‘Sir, you’re going to be speaking at 7,’” he added. “I said, ‘I’ll be there. I’m afraid not to be. I need all the help I can get.’” (New York Post) Read much more here.
El Salvador’s Bukele says violent gang bangers are literal Satan worshippers in sharp immigration warning at
National Prayer Breakfast
El Salvador president spoke at National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday ahead of Trump

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele joined the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, warning attendees that violent gang members in his country have a documented history of worshiping Satan — and that some of those gang members have crossed into the U.S.

"Many people don't know that our enemy was not just the flesh and blood, but spiritual as well. The gangs didn't just murder, rape, extort. They also worship Satan," Bukele said on Thursday morning from the U.S. Capitol. "It's straight up. Literally. When we went to their homes to arrest them, we discovered altars that were used for satanic rituals."

"This is well documented. We put up the pictures, the videos right away. But for some reason, the global mainstream media didn't think it was worth it to cover it. But we know gangs in El Salvador were satanic and they worshiped Satan," he continued.

He warned the body of bipartisan lawmakers and business leaders: "Some of those gangs are here in the United States."

Bukele has previously warned that El Salvador’s security forces found alleged MS-13-linked "satanic" altars and ritual materials during raids.

Bukele is a Trump ally who struck a deal with the U.S. government in 2025 to accept hundreds of Venezuelan gang members, who were illegally living in the United States, into El Salvador's notoriously no-nonsense, high-security prison. (Fox News) Read more here.

Speaker Johnson's remarks with the Press
Speaker Johnson uses Bible to justify secured borders after being asked about Pope’s rhetoric on migrants
Johnson argues 'borders and walls are biblical' while distinguishing between the responsibilities of individuals versus civil authorities
In politics, reporters will ask anything. On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), flushed with victory, held a 10-minute press gaggle after wrangling his caucus of cantankerous cats into passing a spending bill package to end the latest Democrat-initiated government shutdown over federal immigration enforcement. Johnson deftly fielded all the expected questions — on the spending package itself, the prospects for a deal on DHS funding, and a bill to require photo ID in federal elections — before the final question flew out into left field.
“Pope Leo has cited Matthew 25:35 to critique Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda,” began an off-camera, male reporter, unnamed in the C-SPAN footage of the exchange. “How would you respond to Pope Leo in Scripture?” The new pope cited the verse in question, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” in an October 4, 2025 exhortation that argued, “the Church has always recognized in migrants a living presence of the Lord.”
Of course, the question had nothing to do with Speaker Johnson’s long, trying day of political leadership — counting votes, cajoling reluctant members, circumventing potential landmines. It had everything to do with his prominent evangelical Christian faith, which recognizes the Bible as inspired word of God and therefore the ultimate authority for our lives. It’s difficult to imagine any other House speaker from this century (the others were Dennis Hastert, Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy) being challenged for a scriptural response to the pope on a political question. But then, it’s rare for a politician to live out his faith as publicly as Johnson does.
Despite his long day, the Louisianan was prepared for the off-topic question. “You want a theological dissertation? Alright, I’ll post it on my website later today. But let me give you a quick summary,” Johnson answered.
“Borders and walls are biblical — from the Old Testament to the New, God has allowed us to set up our civil societies and have separate nations,” Johnson began. Fact check: this is true. As Paul put it to the pluralistic skeptics of Athens, God “made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place” (Acts 17:26).
At the same time, “We are to welcome the sojourner and love our neighbor as ourselves,” Johnson allowed. “But what’s also important in the Bible is that assimilation is expected, and anticipated, and proper. When someone comes into your country, comes into your nation, they do not have the right to change its laws or to change its society. They’re expected to assimilate. We haven’t had a lot of that going on.” (Fox News) Read much

Lord God, we thank You for Speaker Johnson’s response that brings truth to play against a twisting of Scripture.

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15)
The International Religious Freedom Summit
Beijing Waging ‘War on God’ in Persecuting Faith, Congress Hears

WASHINGTON—The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is waging a “war on God” in its repression of faith, and appeasing such persecution will only invite greater aggression to the world, former Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback told a packed congressional hearing on Feb. 4.

Brownback, testifying at the House Subcommittee on Africa, cast religious freedom as a “stabilizing force” to ensure lasting peace and threats against it as a “major global security issue.”

“Religious persecution is not an isolated human rights concern,” Brownback said. “It is a warning sign that freedom itself is under siege, and when regimes crush faith, they are rehearsing the suppression of every other liberty that follows.”

Communist China, he said, is leading an “alliance of communist, authoritarian, totalitarian regimes” that “literally stop at nothing to control people of faith.”

“They see people of faith as a threat,” he said. “The people of faith are the ones that will be first attacked and the last ones left standing.”

The scale of the issue can be seen in the dollars spent, he said.

“Communist China will spend billions of dollars this year alone to suppress every faith that exists in that country,” he told the lawmakers there. “They‘ll suppress the Uyghur Muslims, they’ll suppress the Tibetan Buddhists. They'll suppress the Christians, and they save their greatest anger and bile for the Falun Gong, a domestically grown group.”

The CCP’s persecution of Christianity is also on the rise in China, Chinese American Grace Jin Drexel testified at the hearing.

Her father, Ezra Jin, has been in a Chinese jail since October, following a coordinated raid on the Zion Church. Over the past year, authorities disrupted church gatherings during Sunday services, and more than 150 pastors and church members have faced threats, detention, or interrogation, she said. Father God, we do thank You for former Ambassador for Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, and his amazing and faithful team for their many years of dedicated service, so that the peoples of the world are free to worship as they wish without fear of religious persecution. We ask that you keep each one and their families safe from harm, as you continue to bless the work of their hands. Amen.

About Capitol Hill Prayer Partners

Our Mission Statement

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners (CHPP) is a ministry which is dedicated to equipping members of the Body of Christ to “pray for those in authority over us” [see I Tim. 2:1-2] in our legislative branch of government. Our primary purpose is to offer intercession for the members of Congress and their staffs each day that the Senate and the House of Representatives are in session; and our chief prayer focus is that God’s “will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” [see Matthew 6:10]. In addition, all of our prayers are anchored in Scripture, because it is written that “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” [Isaiah 55:11]

As we intercede for each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives and the 100 members of the Senate, our heartcry is that our God would touch each heart, drawing them to Himself in salvation. Praise God for his mighty power in the hearts of men!

Because Jesus Christ has shed His blood for all, we too, pray for ALL, in a nonpartisan manner. Moreover, because the scriptures indicate that “the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” [James 5:16b], we are confident that fervent prayer offered in the halls of the highest chambers of government in our land will avail much for America. Capitol Hill Prayer Partners welcomes those who feel called to join us and engage in this strategic work of intercession for our nation: “For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” [Romans 13:1b]

Finally, we also wish to honor the several other ministries that now stand in the nation’s capital, covering the other two branches of our government. We stand united, as “one tribe,” for it is written that: For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our Lawgiver, the LORD is our King; he will save us” [Isaiah 33:22]. In addition, we pray daily “for the peace of Jerusalem” [Ps. 122:6a] and publish news from Israel on our daily reports.

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt ministry. Friends may participate either directly on this website or by subscribing for our daily prayer alerts (The Daily Brief) or our Legislative Snapshots.
