From Decoration Day to Memorial Day: How the US came to honor its fallen heroes
|
|
|
A crowd of more than 5,000 people arrived at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, with a purpose.
They came to place flowers on the graves of soldiers who fought so valiantly on the first Decoration Day, which later became Memorial Day. Before the crowd paid their respects, James Garfield rose to speak.
Before serving as the 20th president of the United States, Garfield was a congressman from Ohio. He also served as a major general in the Union army. During his speech, Garfield affirmed why this day of ultimate sacrifice is so important.
“For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue,” Garfield told the assembled gathering.
As the United States prepares to honor fallen service members for the 158th time on Monday, May 25, here is a brief look at the history of Memorial Day.
How Did the First Decoration Day Come to Be?
The United States was involved in numerous wars throughout the early years of its existence. After the Revolutionary War, the fledgling nation fought the British again during the War of 1812. There was also the Indian Wars and the Mexican-American War, among other conflicts.
None of those resulted in an official day of recognition to honor the war dead. That changed with one act from Gen. John A. “Black Jack” Logan, a veteran of the Civil War. Logan was the commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization consisting of Union vets.
The group’s adjutant-general, Norton P. Chipman, approached Logan after receiving a letter from a Union soldier in 1868, according to a timeline from the U.S. Army Center of Military History. The soldier recommended an annual observance honoring the sacrifice of dead soldiers.
Chipman liked the idea and took it to Logan, who issued General Orders No. 11. It stated: “The 30th day of May, 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.” (WeAreMighty.com) Read more here

Kevin Warsh sworn in as Federal Reserve chair
|
|
Kevin Warsh was sworn in as the new chair of the Federal Reserve by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in a ceremony at the White House on Friday.
The 56-year-old Warsh previously served at the Fed as a member of its Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011, and became the youngest-ever Fed governor having been nominated at the age of 35. Trump nominated Warsh to the role in January, and he was confirmed by the Senate last week on a 54-45 vote.
Warsh steps into the top role at the nation's central bank at a pivotal time, with inflation rising due to an energy price shock caused by the Iran war and markets viewing the prospect of interest rate cuts as increasingly unlikely in the near term.
He replaces former Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term as chairman expired earlier this month. Powell has indicated he will continue to serve as a member of the Fed Board of Governors for the foreseeable future, as his term in that capacity runs until January 2028.
Powell has said that he won't be "shadow Fed chair" and will seek to build consensus with Warsh and the other members of the Federal Open Market Committee, which sets monetary policy, when it's possible to do so. (Fox News)

Lord, we ask that You touch Mr. Warsh with wisdom and understanding. Please grant him the ability to foresee problems and act to stop them before issues arise.

Tulsi Gabbard resigns from Trump Cabinet
|
|
Tulsi Gabbard is resigning from her post as Director of National Intelligence to support her husband through his battle with "an extremely rare form of bone cancer," Fox News Digital learned.
Gabbard notified President Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office Friday. Her last day at ODNI is expected to be June 30.
Fox News Digital exclusively obtained her formal resignation letter, in which Gabbard says she is "deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half."
"Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026," she wrote. "My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer."
Gabbard said her husband "faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months."
"At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle," she said.
Gabbard added: "Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage — standing steadfast through my deployment to East Africa on a Joint Special Operations mission, multiple political campaigns and now my service in this role." (Fox News) Read more here.

Jehovah Rapha, we pray that You will bring healing and life to Tulsi Gabbard’s husband Abraham. We thank You for her service in the Trump administration and ask that Your Spirit bring hope and truth to her as she transitions to a new horizon.

Democrats Publish Long-Awaited 2024 Campaign ‘Autopsy’
|
|
With midterm elections looming on the horizon, Democrats are only just beginning to examine their party’s flaws and analyze the failure of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s disastrous 2024 presidential campaign. After months of pressure from party insiders, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin finally released a nearly-200-page “autopsy” report studying why Democrats lost on such a wide scale in 2024. “For full transparency, I am releasing the report as we received it, in its entirety, unedited and unabridged,” Martin said in a statement shared with media outlets Thursday. “It does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards, but I am doing this because people need to be able to trust the Democratic Party and trust our word.”
The report contains a disclaimer at the top of every page, reading, “This document reflects the views of the author, not the DNC. The DNC was not provided with the underlying sourcing, interviews, or supporting data for many of the assertions contained herein and therefore cannot independently verify the claims presented.” The post-mortem analysis was reportedly compiled after interviewing hundreds of Democrats across all 50 states. Both the executive summary and conclusion of the report are missing, with the DNC saying that the sections were “not provided” by the report’s author. (The Washington Stand) Read more here.

|
Holy Lord, this report did nothing to help Democrats move forward with truth and repentance. We pray that Your Spirit will bring repentance across America, revealing the truth behind the sin that has derailed this political party.
“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

White House gunman had criminal record, history of mental health issues
|
|
|
In July 2025 incident, Best 'claimed he was Jesus Christ and that he wanted to get arrested,' according to court filing
|
|
|
The man fatally shot by Secret Service agents after authorities said he opened fire at a White House security checkpoint Saturday had a documented history of encounters with law enforcement and mental health concerns.
"Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House, who had a violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure," President Donald Trump wrote early Sunday morning on Truth Social.
"The gunman is dead after an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service Agents near the White House gates."
The dead gunman was identified as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old Maryland man who was previously "known to United States Secret Service" around the White House complex, according to a July 2025 D.C. Superior Court filing.
In that incident, Best walked into a restricted area at a White House pedestrian access control post, ignored commands to stop and "claimed he was Jesus Christ and that he wanted to get arrested," according to the filing. He was arrested on an unlawful entry charge in that incident.
Then, Saturday, Best approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW shortly after 6 p.m. ET, pulled a gun from a bag and opened fire on Secret Service officers. Officers returned fire, striking Best, who was taken to a hospital and later died.
A bystander was also wounded, though officials had not said who fired the round that struck that person or released the person’s condition. No Secret Service agents were injured. Trump was inside the White House at the time and was briefed on the shooting. (Fox News) Read more here.

|
Father God, we bring this mentally ill man before Your Throne of Grace. We thank You, O Lord, that his attempt to assassinate President Trump inside the White House has completely failed. We thank You, too, for the ever-faithful Secret Service and their swift response to this danger. Holy One, we ask that You would continue to rest Your Hand upon President Donald John Trump in all the days ahead, as He serves our people as our President. We praise You, Father God, for his safe-keeping, now and always. In Jesus' name, we offer this prayer, amen and amen.
"No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord." (Isaiah 54:17)

1. Netanyahu Told Trump Israel Will Remain Free to Act Against Threats, Israeli Source Says - Algemeiner
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US President Donald Trump Israel would remain free to act against threats in Lebanon during a phone call about an emerging agreement between Washington and Iran on Saturday, an Israeli source said.
Trump said Washington and Iran had “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding on a peace deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping passage that has been effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran in February.
“In last night’s conversation with President Trump, the Prime Minister emphasized that Israel will maintain freedom of action against threats in all arenas, including Lebanon, and President Trump reiterated and supported this principle,” the Israeli political source told Reuters on Sunday, asking not to be named.
Expectations rose that a breakthrough might be imminent in the three-month-old war after Trump said an emerging agreement being brokered by Pakistan would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. (Read more)

4. West Bank, Gaza antiquities bill raises international law concerns, legal adviser warns Knesset - Jerusalem Post
The controversial bill seeking to establish a new civilian authority to oversee antiquitiesand heritage sites within the West Bank and Gaza would constitute a “significant deviation” from current Israeli policy and could violate international law, serving as a way for the government to initiate “creeping annexation,” Knesset Education, Culture, and Sports Committee legal advisor Tami Sella warned on Sunday.
The comments came as lawmakers prepared to advance the legislation toward final votes in the committee.
The contentious bill aimed at creating a new civilian authority to oversee antiquities and heritage sites within the West Bank passed its first reading in mid-May. The proposal is seeking an update to allow authority over the Gaza Strip as well.
The bill is expected to be brought for a vote on Monday in the Knesset Education, Culture, and Sports Committee. If it passes the committee vote, it will advance to its final second and third readings in the plenum to become a law. (Read more)

5. Haredi parties reject latest draft exemption bill, setting stage for Sept. elections
- Times of Israel
The Knesset’s ultra-Orthodox parties have rejected the latest draft of the coalition’s Haredi conscription exemption bill, Channel 12 reported on Sunday, calling the future of the controversial legislation into question.
The latest hurdle to the bill’s passage means it is likely that the two Haredi parties in the Knesset, United Torah Judaism and Shas, will continue pushing to bring elections forward by about a month, likely to September 15 in the middle of the High Holidays, as they have increasingly tied the two issues together.
The rejection of the bill by the Haredi parties came hours after Hebrew media outlets reported that the leadership of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee was preparing to distribute an updated draft of the controversial legislation to lawmakers.

1. Trump champions bid to nix clock changes by adopting permanent daylight saving time - Fox News
President Donald Trump is championing the prospect of putting the kibosh on twice-annual clock changes by making daylight saving time permanent.
A bill to make daylight saving time permanent has been folded into a larger measure that the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced in a 48-1 vote on Thursday.
"Big Vote today (48-1!) in the Energy and Commerce Committee on a Bill including The Sunshine Protection Act, which will be making Daylight Saving Time Permanent! This is so important in that Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks. Many of these Clocks are located in Towers, and the cost of renting, or using, Heavy Equipment to do this twice a year is prohibitive!" Trump wrote in a Thursday Truth Social post.
"It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!" the president declared. (Read more)

Lord, we ask that this not become a ridiculous issue that President Trump’s opponents seize on to cause problems. We remain hopeful that changing our clocks will no longer be necessary.

2. Colorado Dems censure fellow party member Gov Polis for commuting sentence of Trump ally Tina Peters- Just the News
The Colorado Democratic Party has censured fellow party member Gov. Jared Polis for reducing the prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters.
Peters, an ally of Donald Trump, was convicted in 2024 of tampering with county voting machines. She was allegedly trying to prove election rigging six months after the 2020 election, according to Colorado Public Radio. She is scheduled to be paroled on June 1.
In a virtual meeting on Wednesday, the Colorado Democratic Party's State Central Committee voted to censure Polis and condemn his actions. Party member Andrew Brandt said the governor has been a problem for the party for some time, and censuring Peters was too much to overlook.
“I cannot tolerate a governor who treats a law-breaking county clerk and recorder in this way,” Brandt said.
As a result of the censure, Polis cannot be an officially recognized representative of the Colorado Democratic Party at the group's events or functions, nor can he attend as a featured guest. (Read more)

Lord, these Democrat revenge moves because of hating President Trump are out of line and create difficulties for those who may simply be doing their jobs. We pray for Governor Polis to repent and see truth in order to find Your heart in the midst of the problems around him.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

3. Indicted SPLC in Congressional Hot Seat over Funding KKK and Other Groups - The Washington Stand
Congressional scrutiny into the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) continued Wednesday with a hearing of the full House Judiciary Committee focused on “The Southern Poverty Law Center: Manufacturing Hate.” The SPLC faced initial scrutiny in December from the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, but the hearing before the full committee came weeks after the U.S. Department of Justice indicted the SPLC for fraud, related to its paying $3 million to the leaders of white supremacist organizations.
The witnesses focused on the SPLC’s mission creep from bankrupting the Ku Klux Klan to smearing mainstream conservative organizations, including Family Research Council, Alliance Defending Freedom, Turning Point USA, and Focus on the Family. “Americans once associated the Southern Poverty Law Center with fighting the Ku Klux Klan during the civil rights era. That reputation gave the SPLC enormous moral credibility,” insisted FRC president Tony Perkins.
“But, in November 2010, SPLC shifted its focus beyond violent groups and began targeting Christian organizations opposing efforts to redefine marriage and human sexuality,” Perkins testified. “Family Research Council was among the most prominent of that first wave.” (Read more)
|
|
Lord, we pray that true accountability will come to the SPLC after they targeted Your people so heavily. Many Christian organizations were falsely tagged as “hate groups” – and many suffered severe losses of finances as a result. We ask that Your Holy Spirit bring a mighty move of repentance through the SPLC.
“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” ( Acts 4:11-12)

4. More Voter Fraud Charges Scream For The Senate To Pass The SAVE America Act- The Federalist
Another day, another foreign national charged with voting in U.S. elections — and yet another example of why failure to pass the SAVE America Act is not an option.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced authorities had arrested Sunny Manhertz, 40, of Saugus, Massachusetts. The noncitizen has been charged with unlawful voting by an alien and one count of “the procurement, casting, or tabulation of ballots that are known to be materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent under state law,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
Manhertz, a Canadian citizen and legal permanent resident of the United States, is accused of voting in multiple federal elections, including the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 general elections. Federal authorities allege that Manhertz in 2016 lied on his Massachusetts voter registration form, checking “Yes” to the form’s question: “Are you a Citizen of the United States of America?” He did so, the complaint alleges, under penalty of perjury.
If convicted on both charges, the noncitizen could face up to five years in prison, a maximum of four years supervised release and a combined fine up $350,000, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. (Read more here)

5. Texas Dem seeks House seat on vow to imprison ‘American Zionists’ in repurposed immigration center- Just The News
A Democratic House candidate in Texas drew condemnations from her own party after she said that she would turn an immigration detention center into a “prison for American Zionists” if she won the election.
The candidate, Maureen Galindo, a sex therapist and housing activist, is running for Texas’ 35th Congressional District and is currently facing another Democrat in a primary runoff.
In a post to Instagram, Galindo said she would turn the "Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking."
"It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles, which will probably be most of the Zionists," Galindo added
The comments earned Galindo a strong rebuke from Democratic Party leadership, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who would be poised to become House Speaker if his party retakes the chamber in the midterm elections this fall.
“This vile language by her is disqualifying and has no place in American politics, and certainly not in the Democratic Party,” Jeffries said in a joint statement with Rep. Suzan DelBene, who leads the House Democrat’s campaign arm. (Read more)

Lord, only You can get through to the heart and mind of this candidate. We pray for repentance, but should she reject You, we pray that she will be replaced.

6. Trump Takes Massive Step To Keep Americans Safe- Daily Wire
The Trump administration is revamping the immigration court system to speed up deportations.
In its latest move, the Department of Justice hired 82 immigration judges, the most in any single year, the agency announced Thursday. Now, the United States has nearly 700 immigration judges.
“The Trump administration is committed to reestablishing an immigration judge corps that is dedicated to restoring the rule [of] law in our nation’s immigration system,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Today, we are onboarding the largest immigration judge class in agency history.”
“This could only happen thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership and commitment to securing our borders. I also applaud EOIR’s [Executive Office of Immigration Review] leadership team for helping facilitate these hiring efforts and recruiting highly qualified and talented personnel in record time.”
The new class includes 77 permanent judges and 5 temporary ones.
When President Donald Trump returned to the White House and commenced his mass deportation effort, administration officials began a mass firing of immigration judges who had largely granted asylum at higher rates.
Since then, administration officials have dismissed more than 100 immigration judges who granted asylum in 46% of cases, according to The New York Times. (Read more)

Lord, we pray that these new judges will bring wisdom and truth to their positions. We pray that no pressure will affect their decisions but only understanding of the problems that come from various viewpoints. Let all of them judge righteously according to Your will.
“For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” (Matthew 7:2)

Senate GOP erupts over Trump DOJ 'anti-weaponization' fund, punts ICE, Border Patrol funding
|
|
|
|
Senate Republicans are pressing pause on their push to fund immigration enforcement after a tense, closed-door meeting.
But it’s not over internal divisions. This time, the fury is directed toward the Trump administration and the surprise "anti-weaponization" fund created by the Department of Justice (DOJ). It comes as Republicans were near the finish line for their $72 billion package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol.
For now, Republicans are calling it a day and leaving Washington, D.C.
"We will pick up where we left off," Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said.
That makes President Donald Trump's June 1 deadline effectively impossible to meet, but Republicans contend that it’s the administration’s actions that have further complicated an already rocky process.
"The message to the administration is this: we were on a glide path to passing this bill until these announcements," a top Republican aide told Fox News Digital.
The timing of the settlement between Trump and his family and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the subsequent creation of the fund derailed Republicans’ sprint to the finish line. (Fox News) Read more here.

Father, whether or not this new fund is from Your Heart or not is a question. We know that many people were targeted by Democrats and it cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars to rid themselves of the false charges. Granting them some financial relief would be a good thing, but it does not appear that it could pass. Let Your mercy prevail over this contentious issue.

Qatari negotiation team visits Tehran to help US reach 'final deal' to end the war, official says
|
|
|
A Qatari negotiation team is in Tehran on Friday and Saturday "to support the U.S. to reach a final deal that would end the war and address outstanding issues with Iran," an official with knowledge of the visit told Fox News' Chief Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst.
The development comes after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that “slight progress” has been made towards a deal with Iran, but vowed that Tehran “can never have a nuclear weapon.”
“On the issue of Iran. The news this morning, I know it's early still in the United States, a little later in the region, in the Middle East, but we await word on those conversations that are ongoing. There's been some slight progress, I don't want to exaggerate it, but there's been a little bit of movement, and that's good,” Rubio said during a visit to Sweden for a meeting of NATO's foreign ministers. ‘Phantom employees' scandal spurs GOP crackdown on $36B incentive for companies to bypass Americans
|
|
|
The discovery of 10,000 "phantom employees" exploiting a federal work program has helped spur Republicans to tackle the financial incentives behind a foreign worker pipeline costing Americans hundreds of thousands of jobs per year.
Under current federal law, hundreds of thousands of foreign students and employers participating in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension program are exempt from paying Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes, which companies are required to pay for domestic workers. This has led to the creation of a "significant financial incentive" for employers to hire foreign OPT workers over Americans.
Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin introduced a bill Thursday, titled the "OPT Fair Tax Act," that eliminates that incentive by requiring employers to pay the same Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes paid for American workers. By closing the loophole, Grothman believes the bill "helps create a more level playing field for American graduates entering the workforce."
The congressman told Fox News Digital that "Americans should not be put at a disadvantage because Washington created a loophole that favors hiring foreign workers over qualified U.S. citizens." He added that "too many young Americans graduating from our colleges and universities are forced to compete against a system that tilts the playing field against them." (Fox News) Read more.

Experts stunned after uncovering Homer's 'Iliad' on Egyptian mummy in unprecedented find
|
|
|
Archaeologists were stunned after recently discovering one of the greatest works of Western literature placed on top of a mummy in Egypt.
The one-of-a-kind discovery was announced by the University of Barcelona in an April 20 news release.
Researchers from the school uncovered a fragment of Homer's "Iliad" while excavating a Roman-era tomb in the Egyptian town of Al Bahnasa.
The tomb is located in the Al Bahnasa necropolis, once part of ancient Oxyrhynchus, which school officials said was "one of the most important cities of Greco-Roman Egypt."
The University of Barcelona's Oxyrhynchus Archaeological Mission has excavated the necropolis since 1992. The Roman-era tomb and mummy date back roughly 1,600 years.
The "Iliad," an epic poem that centers around the Trojan War, is believed to have been composed around the 8th century B.C., more than a millennium before the mummy was buried.
Led by University of Barcelona professor Núria Castellano, excavators found that the papyrus was "placed on the abdomen [of the mummy] as part of the embalming ritual," the school said in a statement. (Fox News) Read More

"Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Name."
